Description:
This Sunday, we will meet over brunch to discuss the role of Islamic jurisprudence in our daily lives as Muslims. Are we obligated to follow rulings, and if so which ones? Do the laws that arise from Islamic jurisprudence represent divine law or human law? What is the role of ijtihad in Islamic jurisprudence? And, so on...

We will also discuss specific cases, like the situation in Malaysia, where a Muslim woman converted to Christianity, and wanted her ID card to reflect her conversion, but the Islamic Family Law court refused. We can talk about groups like Sisters in Islam, that is making careful arguments for this woman's right to convert to Christianity, in the Islamic legal tradition. Please bring to the table any relevant current issues so that we can look at how the conclusions we come to might apply to real world situations.

Look forward to seeing you all there - in sha' Allah!
