Well then Progressive Muslim Meetup is a place to speak your mind and renew your faith. Intelligent, compassionate people, a good sense of humor, and great potlucks! Check it out."

This group is an arm of Muslims for Progressive Values, Inc. (www.mpvusa.org), a national organization. We meet on the first Sunday of each month for lunch. In addition we plan on organizing one activism, spiritual or social activity gathering between each monthly meetups.
We also have a VERY lively on-line discussion group: http://groups.yahoo.c... . There are people of all walks, searching, asking, answering, questioning on all things Islam, in a respectful and honest manner. Please join us.
This is our mission statement:
This group is for Muslims and friends who are interested in discussing, promoting and working for the implementation of Progressive values -- social justice, human rights, economic opportunity, separation of church and state -- as well as tolerant and inclusive understandings of Islam.
History:
In 2001 CAIR released statistics that claims only 20% of Muslims attend a mosque/Islamic center. So we thought, who and where are these 80%?!! So if you are in that 80% it is time to get organized and be heard. America is hungry for a progressive Muslim voice. Our time has arrived.
Personal note from Ani:
The meetups have been organized throughout the world to nurture a grassroots movement. As a result of 9-11 we Muslims cannot afford to be complacent. I am sick and tired of these crazies killing in the name of Islam and I'm sick and tired of some non-Muslims taking advantage of the status quo.
For Muslims, we are here to nurture the ideals of Islam, the way God, by way of Prophet Muhammad intended us to practice our faith. We are here to discuss, study, to ask the most taboo questions, and to do it in a non-judgmental environment. We want to create a Muslim identity that reconciles with being American, and that being an American and a Muslim is not an oxy-moron.
For non-Muslims, it is a forum so that you will see the true spirit of Islam, the spirit of love and compassion so that you will learn that Muslims too are rich with diversity in its practices and traditions.
In general, people who have joined the progressive Muslim meetups do so because we're not a dogmatic group of people. Regardless of what type of Muslim is sitting at the table we strive to respect, to listen, to learn with an open heart, that is, without discriminating. After all, isn?t that what the Quran asks of us? Can you?
I hope you join us.
Salam, Peace,
Ani
